Deborah Richmond

I just received this update from Bonnie Browning, AQS Executive Show Director, about the upcoming events at AQS Quilt Week Grand Rapids 2013.    Here is the inside scoop!  If you are going to the show, find me!  I will have a press pass badge neck with the name “Quilt Show News”.  Come say hi!

Hi Deborah:
We are excited to be in Grand Rapids again next week for our second AQS QuiltWeek® event at the DeVos Place Convention Center.
There will be nearly 800 quilts on display, including four international exhibits, and the Tentmakers, Hosam and Tarek, will be here again with 125 new pieces of work from the Tentmakers. And, we have a new book, The Ancient Art of Applique: Tentmakers of Cairo, that AQS just published. It will have patterns for 18 cushion covers, one from each of the Tentmakers’ shops, plus lots of photos from the Tentmakers’ street in Cairo.
One new event that will take place there is the Quilt Auction to benefit the Libby Lehman Medical Fund. Many quilts have been shipped to us for the auction, plus we will have baskets of other quiltmaking supplies from the vendors at the show, and two sewing machines – one from Janome and one from Baby Lock. I donated a quilt from one of my books and included a signed copy of the book with it. The auction will be held in Ballroom A at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 16. The auctioneer will be Scott Vander Kolk, Jr. The public is invited.
See you next week in Grand Rapids.
Bonnie
See you at the show!!!
Deborah

When you are born a twin, people are always asking you, “What is it like to be an identical twin?” Linda Carlson says she does not know any other way to be or how she would get along without her twin. Linda was born six minutes before her sister, Diana Henage. She always felt it was someone to fight with although their husbands think they share a brain.

Linda would become a teacher of music education and then special education with a certification from the Library of Congress to transcribe braille. Diana would major in art. Together they would go on to develop “Grammie & Mimi’s Baby Geniuses!” fabric collections, produced by Benartex with colors and graphics that stimulate brain synapse growth in infancy through toddler stages.

Linda is known for her antique four block quilts. She has done extensive research and written articles and books on her research. She has even presented her findings to the Smithsonian Institution. Over the years her collection grew so large that she and her husband had to build a special room in their home to display them. She has donated close to 70 quilts to the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE.

Linda’s husband John has a named her art of quilt collecting “Quilticus Pathologicus”. It is the end stage of quiltmaking − you then start collecting antique quilts.
